Pencil study of a tree

kevin gough www.goughpaint.blogspot.com

A study from a photo I took from a public walking area near where I live, the weather being what it is at the moment, sketching outdoors would be impossible so I have to resort to working from photographs. I find the best way to work from photos is to not copy every meticulous detail as that would result in a very static work. Instead I try to focus on the general shape and value of the image, which is exactly what I would do if I were sketching outside anyway. The sketch was completed using  2H and 6B minen leads and a 9H derwent.

Seascape oil painting..

This is the north coast of Mayo in the cold soft light of an early winter morning.
Oil on canvas 8 x 10 inches

Drawing hands

Derwent pencils and an oil pitt on fabriano.
Once again I am testing this paper to see what it can take.
This drawing was made with finely sanded minen leads which tend to
chisel into the paper. So far so good this paper is taking quite a bit of abuse
and still performing well.

Drawing of a protest

kevin gough www.goughpaint.blogspot.com

Minen leads on coffee soaked Fabriano.
I have begun to use a paper new to me called fabriano.
I soaked it in coffee to give it a little more color.
I guess I'm feeling the need to experiment today.

Drawing "The Kiss"..

This work was completed using derwent pencils, minen leads and my old favorite the oil pitt pencil. This is a drawing of a protest made by ordinary citizens of a riot torn city against government troops sent to impose order. Rather than enter the conflict with violence the women protested by kissing and blessing the troops and reminding
them of their humanity.

Pencil study of detail from Rembrandt's, "woman at an open door"

 kevin gough www.goughpaint.blogspot.com

Done using 7H, 5H and 7B Derwent  pencils and an oil pitt pencil.
This was done on my trip to Galway with my drawing friends to visit the drawing group there. It was done as a study from a Rembrant book I was lucky enough to find in the Charlie Byrne Bookshop  on the day. An absolutely great bookshop with the nicest staff ever, if you ever visit Galway city, then a visit to this bookshop is well worth it.
